Ashley Mintz is a mixed media and collage artist and writer in Nashville, Tennessee. As a lover of words, she often exhibits song lyrics and prose pieces alongside her paintings, sometimes painting words directly into her paintings as a form of storytelling. She has exhibited her work and done poetry and music performances at different arts festivals and venues in the South. She currently teaches art journaling and mixed media workshops to different age groups as a form of healing and self care, and often as part of larger community arts projects.

Program Description:
I work in mixed media and book arts. With my program, students will engage in visual storytelling by creating a life map in the form of a storybook. We will begin by engaging in writing exercises and prompts to pinpoint significant times in each person’s life. And then, using mixed media paper, we will create a large fold out booklet and use different art materials to create a mixed media background on both sides. We will then begin adding things like pockets and extra paper using a simple binding technique. Each square in the folded book will represent a significant point in the persons life. Students will use ink and paint to write about the significant point over the background or they can write on small cards and put the cards into the pockets. The extra paper in some areas of the book will act as space for later journaling and memories. Each week will consist of slowly building up the book, ending with a completed storybook of one’s life….so far!
