Rita Lorraine Hubbard (www.ritahubbard.com) is a retired special education teacher who helps marginalized teens and elderly citizens express themselves through art and writing. Her book, THE OLDEST STUDENT: HOW MARY WALKER LEARNED TO READ, tells the story of an elderly citizen who never gave up on her dream; and her book, HAMMERING FOR FREEDOM: THE WILLIAM LEWIS STORY tells the story of a man who persevered after years of being held back. Rita has received the New Voices Award, the East Tennessee Historical Preservation Award, the 2021 Floyd’s Pick Honor Book Award, and the 2021-2022 Texas Bluebonnet Master List Award.
