Program Title: Rhythm Sessions w/ improv focus

Program Type: Arts Appreciation

Program Description:

ROOTS. Lub and Dub, two sounds that are at the core of the human experience. These two sounds, of course refer to the opening and closing of our hearts valves. The first “note” is heard, or felt as the mitral and tricuspid valves close, the second “note” is heard, or felt, as the pulmonary and aortic semilunar valves close. Along with blinking, chewing and walking, these are some of the subtle cyclical, rhythmic reminders of our existence.

RESET. Our world today is full of new rhythms. We punch keyboards, pull levers and click buttons, helping many to live happy and prosperous lives. But as we have evolved to this new digital age, perhaps an occasional return to our core “life rhythms” in a community setting can allow us to reset for that extra boost of strength and camaraderie-allowing the sound of our community’s metaphorical heart to be heard. Some of us may require this “reset” more than others, and a joyful noise created together in community drumming may be among the most natural and simplistic venues to do so.

REPEAT. We are encouraged to use the metaphor of the heartbeat as the core of our time together; continually communicating with the self and explore our self-expression, value each others’ offerings, be creative, share in healthy release of positive and negative emotions-while tapping into the inner musician.
