Ashley Mintz is a visual artist and poet residing in Nashville, Tennessee. Working in different mediums such as bookbinding, collage, painting and textile, she finds ways to mix the mediums in her own work as well as teaching workshops that incorporate multiple mediums. At a time when we are more busy and distracted than ever, teaching workshops that require patience and attention to detail are important. Through her workshops, which require such intentionality, participants can learn to make different types of journals using hand-stitched binding or no-sew techniques and collages made from fabric and/or paper.

Program Description:
My programming would offer a variation of things to create. For example, there would be two programming options for making handmade journals. The first requires hand stitching, and the other would require no stitching for those who are not able to do detailed work with a needle. These would have to be two totally separate workshops, so for instance, I could not do both the sewing and no-sew techniques within one workshop. Another program that I offer would be making paper collages using only paper, and other materials such as buttons, ribbon, lace, and yarn. The idea for this kind of workshop would be to not have to find magazine images to collage, but instead to cut out objects using paper and then creating a larger collage. And lastly, I also offer programming where we do textile collages using either glue or hand stitching. It’s similar to the paper collages, but the fabric requires a different kind of adhesive and it also allows for more textures and shapes because of the fabric being more malleable. One of my favorite things lately has been making masks or creating faces with fabric pieces.
