FY25 Individual Artist Fellowship in Theater Acting: Mary Ann Washington

By Jared Morrison, Director of Performing Arts –

We’re thrilled to announce that Mary Ann Washington has won this year’s Tennessee Arts Commission’s Individual Artist Fellowship in Acting. Her artistic vision focuses on creating stories that authentically portray the diversity and richness of the black experience, particularly the black female experience. She challenges stereotypes, celebrates culture, and amplifies voices often marginalized in society. Her commitment to social change through art is evident in her teaching of basic acting skills to emerging actors from underserved communities.

Washington’s passion for acting began in childhood, inspired by daytime soap operas. After earning a theatre degree, she immersed herself in our state’s vibrant theatre community spending five years with Memphis’s acclaimed Hattiloo Theatre, showcasing her talent in numerous productions. She is now the artistic director of Memphis’s Actor’s Renaissance Theatre, where continues to make a meaningful impact in the theatre industry as a full-time actor and educator, exemplifying her dedication to nurturing talent and fostering inclusivity.

Congratulations to Mary Ann on this well-deserved honor. We look forward to her continued success and the profound impact of her work on the Tennessee’s arts community.
