ArtEffect Project Open to Students

I Create Change - The ArtEffect

International art competition The ArtEffect Project is open to students in grades 6-12 through February 15, 2017

By Ann Brown, Director of Arts Education —

Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes (LMC) is giving students in grades 6-12 the opportunity to create interpretations, both literal and abstract, that honor the legacies of Unsung Heroes through the ArtEffect Project. LMC’s arts initiative aims to teach students the power they have to create positive change in the world through visual storytelling.

There are two categories for Projects: Celebrating Unsung Heroes and Discovering Unsung Heroes. Students can choose to celebrate the life of an Unsung Hero who has already been discovered by choosing from this list. Students may also discover their own hero from history to celebrate. In order to honor a hero not on the list, students are asked to email their subject idea to artcompetition@lowellmilkencenter.org by December 31, 2016 for approval.

To participate, students must submit their application from, artistic statement and high resolution images of their artwork by February 15, 2017. Experts of art history, design and museum education will join LMC’s executive leadership on a panel to judge the student submissions. Entires will be judged on the creative interpretation of the Unsung Hero’s story, the aesthetic value and the artistic statement. Cash prizes totaling $13,500 will be made.

LMC has also provided an art lesson plan for teachers to use in the classroom. The lesson plan is written to be interdisciplinary and interactive. It also fulfills multiple parts of the National Art Standards. Teachers who are interested in using the lesson plan must simply visit the website and click the link under the For Educators: Art Project Lesson Plan tab.
