McKinney earned a B.S. in Art Education at SUNY College at Buffalo and received a M.A. in sculpture and M.F.A. in ceramics the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Upon graduating, she worked as an Assistant Professor, teaching ceramics and Sculpture at Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS. She was also an Artist-in-Residence and Interim Ceramics Head at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, FL.

When McKinney came to TN she accepted a position as an adjunct instructor of ceramics and 3D design at Walters State Community College in Morristown. She also taught and maintained a studio at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg. Today, McKinney is a Visual Arts Lead at the Multnomah Arts Center on Portland. Her work is in numerous collections such as the Armory Art Center, the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and the Tennessee State Museum.
