Handcrafted rocking chair, 1982
oak, 44 x 39 x 39 inches, 95.8
This is a contemporary adaptation of a traditional “arrow-back” Windsor style rocking chair. The back tapers outward at the top with an exaggerated flare, and has a shaped top rail with simple curves pinned into the back stiles giving the chair an over-sized effect. Eight flattened arrow-shaped spindles form the back. The arms, seat, and seat supports have a “Danish Modern” appearance. Crump, a native of Memphis, graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y. Currently he has his own business and builds furniture of his own design. His work can be found in the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville, as well as numerous corporate, ecclesiastical, and private collections throughout the Southeast.
