Barr designs stencils and engravings from computer-manipulated photographs to create interesting and varied  texture on his functional ceramic work. He earned a B.S. in Secondary Education at the State University of New York College at Oswego. He then enrolled at the University of Memphis where he received a M.F.A. in ceramics in 1978. From 1985-1989 Barr was an instructor at the Memphis College of Art specializing in art foundations. Then in 1989 he began teaching at Middle Tennessee State University where he taught courses in animation, compositing, and applied aesthetics until 2017.
