Pugh received a M.F.A. in ceramics from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN. This clay vase was created around the time he graduated from ETSU. The vase traveled throughout the state from 1970-1972 as part of an exhibition that showcased artistic craft works made in TN. Locations included the Memphis College of Art, Cheekwood Museum, Oak Ridge Community Art Center, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, the TN State Museum and the Dulin Gallery of Art (now the Knoxville Museum of Art), as well as other venues. Once Pugh graduated, he went to work and eventually retired from the Greene Valley Developmental Center in Greeneville, TN.
