Lehnert earned an engineering degree from Auburn University in Alabama and worked for 31 years for Eastman Chemical Company before retiring. Lehnert became fascinated with mineralogy and geology at a young age, designing his first pieces of jewelry in the early 1970s. The popularity and demand in his designs led to Lehnert traveling across the U.S. attending local and regional craft shows and fairs. In 2006, Lehnert opened Alexander & Lehnert Fine Jewelry with co-owner, wife, and fellow jeweler Michelle Alexander.
