In reaching for connection, she found her place was to observe, admire, and love from a distance. And that was enough.

Lakesha Moore Calvin, Connection: From the Outside Looking In, 2004, print collage, 36 x 36 inches

In reaching for connection, she found her place was to observe, admire, and love from a distance. And that was enough.
  • In reaching for connection, she found her place was to observe, admire, and love from a distance. And that was enough.
  • We speak to generational struggle, change and strength. We breathe life and love.
  • Stepping into the unknown, unsure of what lies before, she is prepared for what comes.
  • She pays tribute to the beginning and the continuation of their journey.
  • Searching for origin, she embraces what is revealed and accepts what remains hidden.
  • How do you make space to be the person you desire to be? You create it.
  • Age doesn’t define how we handle grief or disappointment, but it colors the image of that familiar posture.
  • We look for answers from the outside, and find there are greater answers when we look within.
  • Burden lifter, carrier of Spirit, she harnesses a gift and carries us in Spirit.
  • Histories passed down from sacred voices. His is a task to tell their truths. Even when others wrestle to listen to them.
  • In her eyes, I saw her story, her dreams, and her aspirations.
  • Through the foundations of our ancestors, our focus is clearly defined, and the march continues.
  • Cultural markers, meaning makers, cultivators of understanding.
  • She is present, keeper of ancestral memory, and nurturer of Truth. She is a champion of evolution and transformation.
  • Activist. Farmer. Father. Man.
  • Through twists and turns, she is light.
I Am/We Are

Online Artist Talk with Lakesha Moore Calvin
Friday, February 17 at 11am Central/12pm Eastern RSVP here!

Artist and educator, Lakesha Moore Calvin earned a M.F.A. with a focus on painting from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and a B.F.A. from Washington University in St. Louis. Most recently, she received her M.Ed in Instructional Practice from Lipscomb University in Nashville. Formerly, Lakesha Moore, Lakesha is recently married, and excited about her present journey and continues to be inspired by her family and is grateful for transformative professional opportunities.

The title I Am/We Are developed from conversations surrounding faith, in conversation with reading and exploring the idea of I am, I exist, and I am present. While she is an individual, Lakesha is constantly influenced by her family, friends and ultimately memory. The gathering of those influences come together as representations of her thought; in college Lakesha was introduced to oils and now it is a preferred medium.  She enjoys the flow of movement on canvas and panel and the act of mixing on her palette becomes a valued meditative process.
