This mural (50 x 9 feet) reflects the diverse unincorporated community’s desire for visibility and recognition as well as shared values, visibly rooting Black narratives within the region’s cultural landscape. Students participated in the installation and discussions, fostering a sense of ownership, and the project generated public interest and dialogue. Jason Flack was the primary project artist, with Bud Ries providing additional creative and labor support.
The mural was sponsored by the Tennessee Arts Commission’s FY23 Creative Placemaking grant and was managed by Black in America: Research, Education & Support.
