Sydney-based artist Sophi Odling was the first international muralist DMA has brought in to paint in Tennessee thanks to local woodworker Andy Rigney who wanted to contribute more art to his hometown. Odling’s children are a major source of inspiration in her work, and she adores “watching the pure innocence and their journeys as they grow,” she says. Shift features a repetitive portrait of her daughter Hunter.
“This piece celebrates the evolution of individual identity,” Sophi explains. “It seeks to create a moment—a brief incident of self-reflection, a powerful memory, an open invitation to explore transitions from one place or state to the next that ignite conversations about shifting identities, attitudes and histories.”
The Shift mural was sponsored by the Tennessee Arts Commission’s FY24 Creative Placemaking grant and managed by DMA Events. Image by Odinn Media.
