Completed in Viola, this dual-mural project reflects the power of sustained community investment in public art. Artist Megan Lingerfelt first installed “Magnolia” on the west-facing wall of Viola’s Guest House on the Square in 2021. Five years later, she returned to create “Laurel” (60 x 20 feet) on the building’s east-facing wall, supported by a combination of grants and contributions from local businesses, organizations and residents.
Together, the two murals transform a single structure into a cohesive visual landmark, framing the building with complementary works that speak to place, continuity and collaboration. Despite challenges during installation—including extreme weather and environmental obstacles—the project came to life through the combined efforts of the artist, DMA-events, local partners and community members. In a town of just 144 residents, the murals stand as a testament to the outsized impact of collective action and the role of public art in shaping and activating shared spaces.
Viola’s Guest House on the Square occupies a restored, 100-year-old former grocery building, where two upstairs vacation rentals now overlook the heart of this small-town Tennessee community.
The mural was sponsored by the Tennessee Arts Commission’s Arts Fy26 Small Rural Partnership Support grant and was managed by DMA Events.
