The mural of David Crockett, popularly referred to as “Davy” Crockett, was placed near the Capitol Theater to recognize the significant historical role of the pioneer-turned-politician, born in nearby Limestone, and it commemorates the fact that the Walt Disney movie that made “Davy Crockett” a household name premiered at the Capitol. In 1955, when the Disney movie “Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier” was released, its star, Fess Parker, visited Greeneville, as the film premiered both here and in San Antonio, Texas, site of The Alamo, where Crockett died fighting in support of Texas.
The mural (5’7” x 3’6”) was created by Joe Kilday and was sponsored by the Tennessee Arts Commission’s FY13 Arts Build Communities grant and managed by Greene County Partnership.
