Art at Winding Stairs

As a public park develops around the Winding Stairs natural landmark, this grant funded the integration of art into the design through a logo, signage, paintings, a sculpture and a mural. The park was opened in June 2015 within the borders of Macon County featuring woods, hillsides, bluffs, natural springs and an impressive, deeply entrenched stream gorge. Erosion from the stream has created small drops with the vertical walls of the bordering cherry limestone, creating the Winding Stairs. The Art at Winding Stairs project included creations by school children and local artists throughout its implementation.

A painted sign shows a boy kneeling by a creek, with a plaque below that reads, In memory of Billy Wilson McClard for his service to citizens of Macon County. The area is outdoors with trees in the background.

An oval painting mounted on a white board depicts a rocky canyon with a small cascading waterfall and green foliage. The background shows blurred trees and sunlight.

A wooden sign in a forested area reads Winding Stairs Cascades with an image of a cascading stream above the text. Trees and undergrowth surround the sign, and the ground slopes upward.

A wooden pavilion with a metal roof shelters several picnic tables in a grassy, wooded area. Trees surround the structure, and a small concrete container sits in the foreground.
