This is Orange Mound

“This is Orange Mound” was a six-week summer inter-generational arts project designed to bring elders and youth together for common purpose and understanding in the historic, but now challenged, predominantly African-American Orange Mound community. The project served 10th to 12th graders who reside in Orange Mound or have connections to the community, particularly those who have limited exposure to the arts. The program included instruction in a variety of arts forms, life skills, community services, as well as science and technology training. It promoted collaborative learning that fosters teamwork, group cohesiveness, and open dialogue. “This is Orange Mound” culminated with a multimedia performance.

A collage shows people attending an event, a Melrose High School sign, the cover of a book titled This Is Orange Mound, and individuals speaking and listening in a community setting.

A collage with three images: a historic marker for Deaderick Family Cemetery, people boarding a bus, and an older woman holding papers and a microphone while speaking to a group outdoors. A woman holding a microphone interviews a man while another man films with a video camera. Several people and colorful artwork are visible in the background.
