Mike Calway-Fagen is an artist, writer, and curator based in Chattanooga, TN. He received a B.F.A. from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and an M.F.A. from the University of California, San Diego. Recently he opened solo exhibitions at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, Ditch Projects in Oregon, and the Soo Visual Arts Center in Minneapolis. Mike has attended residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, The Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, The Fine Arts Work Center, and Sculpture Space in Utica, NY. He has lectured across the Country at institutions including the Universities of California, Tennessee, Oregon, Nevada, SAIC, Bowdoin College, MCAD, BYU, Auburn, and others. Mike’s work has been reviewed in Art Papers, World Sculpture Magazine, Art F City, and is pictured on the cover and is the focus of a chapter in a new book, Art, Animals, and Experience (Routledge Press). His essays and reviews can be found in the publication, Number Magazine and online platforms, Temporary Art Review and BurnAway. His 26-artist curatorial project, blue in the face, was recently reviewed in Art Papers magazine. In the spring of 2017, Mike resigned from his position as Head of the Sculpture Department at the University of Georgia, Athens to take a new position as Director of Galleries at Stove Works, a soon-to-open 75,000 square foot art center in Chattanooga.
