Bruce Scism

Songwriter • Woodworker/Instrument Builder

Bruce Scism is a songwriter whose work spans country, Americana, bluegrass, and roots music, pairing memorable melodies and distinctive harmonies with thoughtful lyrics and vivid storytelling. His songs have earned industry recognition, been recorded by multiple artists, and secured placements through music libraries and sync agencies.

Scism’s songwriting has drawn praise from Phil Sweetland, music and radio contributor to The New York Times, who commended “Darlin’ I Do” and “Speed of Lonely” for their Bluegrass/Americana sensibility and Jackie Lawson’s vocals. A TAXI reviewer praised “Two Hearts” as a swinging, retro-country song in the spirit of Bob Wills and Lyle Lovett, highlighting its melody, chord changes, and compelling train-station story. His songs have been recorded by Jackie Lawson (“Waiting”), Yasmin Tanriverdi (“Darlin’ I Do”), Jonathan McEuen (“Lonely Fool” and “Farmer’s Joy”), Scott Gates (“Farmer’s Joy”), and Jay Shelton, who recorded “Speed of Lonely” on his album “Home”. “Farmer’s Joy” and “Lonely Fool” also appear on McEuen’s The Freesong Sessions.

Scism’s sync placements and library relationships include Audio Brain, Crucial Music, Two-oh-six (2060), WFMP (World Fusion Music Production), Nighthouse Creative, and Quest Worldwide, and others. He is a signed writer with Crucial Music Custom House in the Americana genre.

His honors include 2007 nominations for Songwriter of the Year and Song of the Year from the Houston Fort Bend Songwriters’ Association, as well as Best of SongU recognition for eight songs, including “Show Me the Way Home,” “River of Regret,” “Guide Me Home,” and “Passing of Two Hearts Affection.” He also studied recording engineering, mixing, and mastering under Steve Bishir, a five-time Grammy winner recognized for his engineering expertise.

Outside music, Scism is an accomplished woodworker and instrument builder. Named Emerging Artist of the Year by the Tennessee Craft Association, he also received an apprenticeship to intern with luthier Amanda Ewing – learning how to build a fiddle. He also studied acoustic-guitar building with luthier Robbie O’Brien and has since taught others the craft.
