David Driskell

While living in Nashville, Driskell was professor of art and chairman of the department of art at the Fisk University 1966-1977. He studied art at Howard University and received his M.F.A. degree from the Catholic University of America. He taught art for more than 40 years and served as a visiting art professor at numerous institutions nationally as well as internationally. His work (in a variety of mediums and styles) has been exhibited throughout the United States, in Europe and in Africa. The recipient of three Rockefeller Foundation Fellowships and a Harmon Foundation Fellowship, Driskell has also received thirteen honorary doctoral degrees in art. As an artist and scholar, Driskell is considered one of the world’s leading authorities on the subject of African American Art.
