Smoky Mountain Fiber Arts Festival
April 21 - April 23
The eight annual Smoky Mountain Fiber Arts Festival will be held at the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center in Townsend, Tennessee, April 21-23, 2017. The Festival will depict the transformation of raw materials to finished art and finished goods characterized as “sheep to shawl.” The event is designed for beginners and experienced fiber artists, hobbyists, and school age children. Come to explore your creativity and learn and enhance your interests in the fiber arts! The complete process will be on display – carding, spinning, dyeing, crocheting, felting, knitting, and weaving – through demonstrations, classes and a marketplace. The event highlights artists, instructors and vendors primarily from Tennessee. The Festival is hosted by the Townsend Artisan Guild in collaboration with the Tennessee Valley Handspinners.
Multiple fiber sources will be on exhibit, including llamas, sheep, goats, rabbits, flax and cotton; East Tennessee farmers will be on hand to discuss aspects of raising these animals and crops. Teenagers from Saddle Brook Farm, Jefferson City, TN, representing the Junior Sheep Producers Association, will show their animals and answer questions about raising them. Introductory classes such as drop spindle spinning will be a taught to illustrate traditional skills for material selection and transforming raw fibers into thread. More advanced classes will be offered for experienced fiber artists taught by nationally and regionally recognized instructors. Vendors will illustrate technique as well as sell supplies for fiber artists; finished products will be available for interested buyers.
New for 2017 will be an emphasis on youth classes in cooperation with the Girl Scouts of America. Drawing, clay sculpting and fiber (textile) classes will be offered that are the component of the Girl Scout badges.
Complementary exhibits of other art forms such as two-dimensional visual arts, woodcarving, and pottery will run concurrently.
